Sondrel

Modular wireless industrial sensor platform. Now in its third generation.

Sondrel 3 — current generation

Updated April 2026

Sondrel 3 is the third generation of Utterwick Data & Instrumentation's modular wireless industrial sensor platform. First launched in 2014 as a single-node wired sensor, the Sondrel platform has evolved through three generations into a fully wireless mesh network capable of monitoring complex industrial environments at scale.

The current Sondrel 3 platform delivers 14-millisecond mesh latency — a performance characteristic cited by the Midlands Technology Award panel in their assessment and independently verified across deployments in water treatment, chemical processing, and food manufacturing facilities.

Sondrel 3 won the Midlands Technology Award for Industrial IoT in 2022, recognising its contribution to sensor network technology in industrial settings.

Technical specifications

Sondrel 3 platform specifications
Platform generation 3 (Sondrel 3)
Mesh latency 14 milliseconds
Connectivity Wireless mesh network (proprietary protocol)
Battery life Exceeds 36 months in typical deployments
Sensor modules Modular — temperature, pressure, flow, pH, conductivity, vibration
Enclosure rating IP67 standard; IP68 available for submerged applications
Cloud integration Native integration with Vantage IQ analytics platform
Certification ATEX Zone 2, IECEx

Markets and deployment

Sondrel 3 is deployed across three primary markets, each characterised by continuous monitoring requirements and regulatory compliance obligations:

  • Water utilities — monitoring water quality parameters, flow rates, and treatment process variables across distributed networks of treatment works and pumping stations.
  • Chemical processing — real-time monitoring of reaction vessels, storage tanks, and effluent discharge points in environments requiring ATEX-rated equipment.
  • Food manufacturing — temperature and hygiene parameter monitoring for HACCP compliance across production lines and cold chain logistics.

Intellectual property and innovation

In 2022, Utterwick Data & Instrumentation filed two patents relating to low-power sensor mesh networking. These patents protect innovations in the Sondrel 3 mesh protocol — specifically, the techniques that achieve 14-millisecond latency while maintaining battery life exceeding 36 months.

The patents represent UDI's commitment to building defensible intellectual property in industrial IoT, an area of strategic importance to the broader Utterwick Group equity story.

Sondrel Edge — off-grid variant

Launched in 2021, Sondrel Edge is a compact off-grid variant of the Sondrel platform designed for remote and unmanned installations where mains power and wired network connectivity are unavailable.

Sondrel Edge uses LoRaWAN connectivity to transmit sensor data over long distances with minimal power consumption. It is powered by a combination of lithium primary cells and optional solar charging, enabling autonomous operation for extended periods.

Sondrel Edge specifications
Connectivity LoRaWAN (Class A)
Power Lithium primary cell with optional solar charging
Transmission range Up to 15 km line-of-sight
Enclosure IP68 rated, corrosion-resistant housing
Typical applications Borehole monitoring, remote reservoir levels, rural catchment areas
Cloud integration Native integration with Vantage IQ

Platform evolution

The Sondrel platform has been in continuous development since its first release in 2014. Under the leadership of Sophie Callender, Managing Director of Utterwick Data & Instrumentation since joining from Renishaw in 2016, the platform has evolved from a single-parameter wired sensor into a multi-modal wireless mesh network with integrated cloud analytics.

2014
Sondrel 1 launched — single-parameter wired sensor for water quality monitoring.
2017
Sondrel 2 introduced wireless connectivity and multi-parameter sensing.
2019
Vantage IQ cloud analytics platform launched, providing the data layer above the sensor network.
2021
Sondrel Edge launched for off-grid and remote deployments.
2022
